Example (fictional data)

A care coordinator in Leeds drives her own car between clients three days a week. She used to rebuild her journeys from her calendar at the end of the month. Now each trip is logged with its purpose and miles, the claim at 55p a mile is ready on the first of the month, and she can see how close she is to 10,000 business miles for the tax year.

How it works

If you use your own car for business journeys, HMRC sets approved mileage rates: from tax year 2026 to 2027, 55p a mile for cars and vans for the first 10,000 business miles and 25p for each mile after that. Before 6 April 2026 the first rate was 45p.

To claim, you need a record of each business journey. Many people rebuild it from memory or a calendar at the end of the month. Answers to common questions are in the questions section, and you can start at the bottom of the page.

MileLog UK does one narrow job: it keeps your business mileage log and works out the claim at the HMRC rates.

Each journey is recorded with its date, purpose, start, destination and miles, and personal miles are kept apart from business miles.

At the end of each month you get a claim sheet with the business miles and the amount at the approved rates, ready to send to your employer.

The tax year total shows how many business miles you have driven, when you pass 10,000 miles and the rate changes to 25p.

Regular routes, such as the drive to a client you visit every week, can be saved once and added again in a tap, so a busy week does not mean typing the same trip five times.

If you forget to log a journey on the day, you can add it later with its date and purpose, and the monthly sheet is updated before you send it.

Travel between home and your normal place of work is ordinary commuting and is not business mileage, so the log keeps those trips out of the claim unless you mark them as business journeys.

If your employer already pays you something per mile, the claim sheet shows the approved amount next to what you were paid, so you can see whether there is a difference to raise with your employer or note for your tax return.

It is meant for employees who drive their own car for work — care workers, sales staff, engineers, surveyors and anyone who visits clients — and for sole traders who use the mileage rates for their car instead of actual costs.

All monthly sheets and the full journey log stay available by tax year, so the record is there if your employer or HMRC asks for it later.

To start, you only need your car and your next business journey; past journeys from this tax year can be added from your own notes.

MileLog UK keeps the log and works out the amounts; your claim and your tax return stay your responsibility.
